The Peoples of Aevum

The Five Peoples

Five peoples answer the First Folio. Each walks its own ladder of callings, and every one of them is set down in the same Codex.

Shared by all five

  • One beginningEvery people sets out from Firstpage, the small market settlement beside the Keepers at the heart of the world. None has a homeland of its own to retreat to: all five share one world and one Codex.
  • Chosen at creationYou choose your people when you make your character, as a man or a woman — and from that first line onward, the Codex remembers it.
  • Two callings, two professionsEach people walks a Fighter line and a Mystic line; dwarves walk only the first. A first profession is taken at level 20, and a second at level 40.

Humans

The hand that writes

Humans live briefly and write quickly. What they lack in years they make up in ink: no people has filled more pages of the Codex, and none has filled them in such a hurry. A human life is short enough to fit in a margin, and humans spend it trying to spill past the edge.

They are the people of the second attempt — the ones who fail on one page and simply turn to the next. The Record favours no one, and we Keepers favour no people. Still, it has not escaped us that most of the hands in our order were born human.

Elves

The long memory

Elves live long enough to watch a word change its meaning. They keep memory the old way, in song, retelling a thing until it can no longer be forgotten — and they have always regarded the Codex with the courtesy one shows a gifted younger sibling.

Ask an elf why she walks beside the Record now, and she will tell you that songs can be silenced and ink cannot. Their scouts move lightly and their mystics listen closely; both learned long ago that what goes unheard goes unremembered.

Dark Elves

The unwritten page

Once, some among the elves chose to go unrecorded. They did not flee the Codex; they stepped out of its light and let the pages meant for them stay blank. We Keepers call those pages the Silence, and we have never learned all that was done inside it.

In the First Folio they have returned to the page, on their own terms. A dark elf will let you set down what she did, but never why. Their blades are quick and their curses patient, and they forget no debt — they simply prefer to keep that ledger themselves.

Orcs

The spoken oath

Orcs trust nothing until it has been said aloud before witnesses. An oath shouted over a fire is worth more to them than any page, and a scar is worth more than both: a record no one can steal, burn or misread.

We Keepers have learned to write fast around orcs. Their shamans chant the names of the fallen so the living will carry them, and their fighters ask only that a deed be seen. They came to the Codex late, and they came loudly, and every page they touch knows it.

Dwarves

Records cut in stone

Dwarves have never quite forgiven the Codex for being written on vellum. Their own records are cut into stone and struck into metal, and they measure a life by what it left behind that can still be lifted.

No dwarf walks the mystic road; they trust what can be weighed, forged and tested on an anvil. Their scavengers find what others threw away, and their artisans make it worth keeping — which, ask any dwarf, is the only honest way to be remembered.
